Drawing InspirationPlaying up the charm of this South St. Louis home, design firm Sedoria worked with the original mud-set tile wainscot running around the perimeter of the space to create a ‘50s modern style kitchen. Pendant fixtures are mixed with ‘50s style surface lighting, and "Stirring Orange" paint by Sherwin-Williams contrasts the black, white and green palette to pull the room together. The retro style Big Chill refrigerator and other similar appliances add to the look.
Functional FrillsThis galley kitchen comes alive with intuitive space planning. A table that once blocked the room's flow was eliminated in lieu of a more functional island that doubles as seating, creates a clear traffic flow, and delineates the cook's area from family and guests.
The Winning PointSubtle details make this small space feel open and welcoming. An arched cabinetry valance softens the space while juxtaposing the angular maple island top with jigsaw detail and a tapered end.
Judges' Comments"Smart details and clean, simple lines create an effective use of existing space. Appliance selections and the shape of the island give it a stylish look suited to the home, as well as to the area."
