“Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson |
Sunny days and cool, breezy nights are upon us, and as we head outdoors to mingle with the season’s fruitful treasures, it’s clear that summer has arrived. Not wanting to waste a single moment of the fragrant air and calming sounds that early summer provides, we gathered two local designers on the sleeping porch of SLHL friend, Ann Dollarhide, to create fanciful and fashionable options for her spacious sleeping porch.
Interior designer Lonnie Dorn, of Plunkett Home Furnishings, transformed the porch into a sophisticated getaway spot with rich, romantic highlights and delighful dollops of color reflecting the blooming wonders of the ambient landscape. The crisp lines of the bedding complement the structured furnishings, and hints of gold and green give off a regal air. Light, subdued hues allow the room to blend seamlessly into the surrounding nature.
“It’s a traditional look with an Asian influence,” says Lonnie. “The bright pops of pink and green lend an updated feel to the classic Asian ambiance of the room’s décor.”

“It’s a crisp, pretty look that beckons summer.” –Nick Craynon, visual manager, Williams-Sonoma Home |
Create a personal paradise by transforming your screened porch into a comfy retreat. Pile on the pillows and layer linens, dressing your bed to the nines. Selecting matching collections from your favorite design shop will ensure you have every last detail to complete the look.
Williams-Sonoma Home filled Ann’s porch with preppy, nautical elements and draped the room with textured neutrals, adding a sunny splash of orange to evoke the feel of a beach-side bungalow. “This look is soft, airy and remniscent of a day at the coast,” says Nick Craynon, visual manager. “There is so much inspiration throughout the room. The oxford sheets are modeled after your favorite oxford shirt. And they’re actually that comfortable, too. They’re designed to get better with each wash.”
Summer scenes further inhabit the space through an assortment of seashells and starfish, as well as crisp cottons and stark whites. “A sleeping porch is the ideal place to be this time of year,” says Nick. “You can relax, enjoy the breeze and daydream about all the season has to offer.”
