SLHL: Finally... it’s spring! What is your idea of the ultimate May Day bouquet?

BARB: Well, after the winter we’ve had, I’d say everyone is ready for some springtime color. I like to offer my customers something just a little bit different, such as an airy look for my bouquets and centerpieces, and definitely a mix of lots of different flowers. Lilacs, peonies, hyacinth and sweet peas are naturals for May bouquets. Flowering branches add texture and whimsy to an arrangement, such as cherry blossoms, flowering quince and vibernum.

SLHL: Are there any trendy flowers that you’ve noticed customers are drawn to lately?

BARB: Ranunculas have become very popular. They are available in all sorts of bright colors but also have beautiful pale hues. Hydrangeas and peonies are classic, not trendy, but people love them, and now we can get them almost year-round.

SLHL: Beyond the centerpiece, can you give us some ideas for using fresh flowers in your home décor?

BARB: Flowers on an entryway table are always a nice touch. They help set the mood and smell so good when you open the door. Fresh flowers anywhere are just so gracious. Many of our clients use our arrangements on their coffee tables, kitchen tables, and in their bedrooms and bathrooms. We even had one client who wanted flowers in her master bedroom closet!

SLHL: Do you design florals for parties and weddings?

BARB: Absolutely! We’ve done huge parties and smaller, more intimate gatherings. I think flowers can play a huge part in setting the tone for a get-together. Containers are also very important to me. If customers can bring their own containers to our shop, we can fill them any way they want. I especially love using antiques that have special meaning for their owner. They add such character to the arrangement. For weddings, I really like to get to know the bride. We sit and chat for a long time, and my goal is to create a floral fantasy for her that is unique to her personality.

SLHL: You really go the extra mile to make your customers happy and give them one-of-a-kind florals.

BARB: Many of our clients have also become our friends. I enjoy getting to know them and their individual styles. It’s so rewarding to bring the beauty of nature into someone’s home and make them really happy.
