Fit for a King
A Towering Turret Recalls the Romance of a Medieval Castle.
Quietly nestled in the picturesque countryside of St. Albans rests a custom home inspired by the legend and romance of medieval European castles. With four massive turrets piercing the sky, creating a sense of power and fortification, this one-of-a-kind residence, designed by Rich Just of R.L. Just Architect, P.C., is fit for a king.
“Our client was very motivated in his desire to create an extraordinary residence that mimicked the distinctive architectural style of the Middle Ages,” says Rich.
Originally serving as a castle’s powerful defense mechanisms, turrets today serve a more decorative purpose. This particular turret houses a stunning shower in the home’s luxurious master bath. Water spills into the shower from a custom-designed stone waterfall and is complemented by a rain shower-head. The many windows allow light to penetrate the large volume of space, casting a play of shadows on the curved walls.
From the full height stone wall to the intricate detailing of the corniced brickwork, the details of this project are what truly contribute to its success. Small, arched windows step up around the outside of the tower, replicating the vertical slits used in medieval times, which allowed archers to fend off attackers. The tower is capped with a steeply sloped roof and architectural shingles, and a slight curve starting at the fascia board adds yet another dimension to the detail of this truly unique, unequivocally beautiful and ageless design.
