DESIGNER SKETCH

Background: 23 years in the lighting industry (American Lighting Association LS); 3 years with Metro Lighting.
Design inspiration comes from: Keeping up with new trends in the industry, attending Light Fair International and following new product introductions.
High-tech trends: Sustainable, aesthetically pleasing lighting sources, such as recessed, under-cabinet, in-cabinet lighting, and decorative hi-tech lighting, such as monorail, and colorful pendants.
An essential lighting tip: Dimmers should be used on products to help create the desired effect in a room.

Can you share any new lighting trends for 2010?
Our industry continues to introduce cutting-edge lighting fixture designs and products. The overwhelming idea is the use of LED in the lighting industry to produce a sustainable lighting product that uses less power consumption and is eco-friendly.

In terms of lighting that would enhance a space with a modern aesthetic, what comes to mind?
The lighting must be very clean and soothing in terms of design – using interesting yet simple pendants in a kitchen and sconces in a bath, for example, with some recessed lighting to add impact.

How do you collaborate with your lighting clients?
Under-standing the clients’ needs in regard to their project size and scope is of utmost importance to me, as well as working with the architect, builder and designer to capture the design scheme or plan of the particular project. It is essential that the lighting plan be considered as crucial at the beginning stage of the overall design plan. I work with my clients to analyze how lighting in each of their spaces will emphasize and impact the mood and function of each room. Lighting plans include technically oriented considerations for spaces such as task areas where, as in all areas of the home, the amount of light and placement of light is of utmost importance.

What are some of your lighting tips for our readers?
First, I would suggest that homeowners use a certified ALA lighting specialist. Secondly, be prepared with your questions and considerations that need to be accomplished in the project. Consider lighting as one of your most brilliant and important accessories within your home’s design.

“My passion is to add lighting character and ‘jewelry’ to a project – to make it unmistakably astonishing and exceptional!”
