Natural Design
Graceful prairie grasses and native plants keynote the environmentally friendly Showhouse landscape.

To draw the visitor toward the home, landscape designer Mary Pritchard and Jennifer Schamber of Greenscape Gardens lined the front walk with rows of flowing, drought-tolerant fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln'). Near the foundation, sustainable shrubs include hardy, dark-green ‘Blue Maid' holly (Ilex ‘Blue Maid') and bright ‘Gold Mop' false cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Gold Mop'), which also provide color and textural contrast.

At the rear of the home, the terraced landscape is designed to draw visitors toward the outdoors. Native plants including blackhaw virburnum (Virburnum prunifolium), river birch (Betula nigra), white fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus), vernal witch hazel (Hamamelis vernalis), sweetspire (Itea virginica ‘Little Henry'), beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), and winterberry (Ilex verticillata ‘Red Sprite') provide color and link the landscaping to its natural surroundings. In spring, the hillside will be seeded with wildflowers.
