CHALLENGE: With a home that rests on a heavily wooded site, nearby pesky mosquitoes forced Barb and her husband, David, to the indoors early each day. The challenge for Barb was to make their new living space feel like it had always been part of the home.
SOLUTION: Playing off of the home's contemporary lines and natural cedar finish, the transformation – including a three-season room – unfolded in part by having the roof of the addition follow the roof line of the home, sizing new windows to match existing ones, and finishing the addition's exterior in cedar. The relaxed space includes an organic combination of furniture finishes, metals and woven woods. In creative fashion, Barb selected art – an antique door – above the cozy sectional that reveals a soft green patina beneath peeling paint. Indoor/outdoor porcelain tile complements the interior color scheme of the home, which favors browns, golden yellow, soft green and black. “We picked the sectional and chaise lounge for long summer naps and relaxation. The teakwood rocker is a personal favorite. It nicely complements the woven wood furnishings, including an ottoman that doubles as a coffee table,” says Barb. “Now we have an indoor space with a delightful outdoor feel to entertain friends on summer evenings.”
