Simple Elegance

Internationally renowned designer Barbara Barry describes herself as an American designer, first and foremost. She synthesizes her own life experiences to create classic designs for homes that exude a sense of timelessness. SLHL’s editors had the privilege of spending time with her at the Interior Design Center of St. Louis on her recent trip to the Midwest, where she graciously shared her thoughts on fashioning harmonious design.

How would you describe the time-less style of your designs?
My designs are all about harmony, tranquility and style. They are original; I've always designed for myself. I had a very elegant mother and attribute my sense of style, in part, to her. I love to see the world, and to me, traveling is so inspiring. I'm a kid in a big sandbox; I have a little “Gypsy” in me. When I design, I draw and paint everything first. In my mind's eye, I see each piece fully formed. I don't see [a particular item] as part of a collection; I design pieces, paring each down to its very essence.

What was your design inspiration for the new collection – Barbara Barry Realized by Henredon?
It is simple elegance, and it can happen anywhere. It's not so much a style as it is a quality of character. I love the 1940s, and [in terms of color] I love neutrals. There's a neutral shade of every color – think of burnt red and French blue-gray. If it's neutral, it can live with others.

Your design has been described as having crisp silhouettes, inspired forms and refined features. How would you embellish this description in regard to your new collection?
The pieces have a fluid, sensuous, feminine line. Each piece has a resolve. Achieving structural harmony and balance – it frees you. I like to walk into rooms that have an “out-breath.”

In terms of interior design crossing over into fashion, what's on the horizon in 2010?
It's the confidence to really have your own signature style. Energy is what it's all about. [In terms of style] simple elegance could easily be wearing pearls and a cashmere sweater with Levi's. Ultimately, being yourself is the greatest thing.

"I hope I can inspire other designers to bring out their own originality."
