Less than 100 Square Feet

Designed for her client’s two elementary-school-aged boys, this 60-square-foot bathroom by Joni Spear Interior Design needed to be masculine enough to take the boys well into their teenage years while having a modern, farmhouse feel. An unused closet was eliminated allowing the designer to include a double vanity so each child would have his own sink. The space is predominately covered with white tile in a larger size with dimensional waves to get away from the standard white subway tile. In the vanity area, a gray-and-brown granite countertop was chosen to hide dirt and spills the boys may incur.

For interest, a glass mosaic tile provides a striking contrast between the counters, flooring and white tiles. Used in an unconventional way, the designer created two vertical stripes form floor to ceiling, first separating the two sinks and second down the shower wall creating the illusion of a waterfall. Soft blue paint gives the space a more masculine feel. Custom mirrors were made locally from wooden pallets and were painted and stained to give a rough, yet polished feel. Lights with a dark bronze finish and Edison bulbs complete the rustic charm.

Why the judges love it: Handsome and classic, this space is functional for two young boys. The shelf on the bottom of the vanity is perfect for storage. The seamless glass in the shower makes the space feel bigger.
