For a couple looking to retire in their beloved Sunset Hills neighborhood, there was no better scenario than to have their builder son step in to make it happen. Mike Borzillo, who is now president of the family business, A.J. Borzillo, has been honing his expertise as a custom homebuilder since age 16. Growing up in a family of professional builders, he became an accomplished carpenter and contractor, working alongside his father. Mike's superior craftsmanship and hands-on approach have provided many St. Louis families with the homes of their dreams.

Fun, yet sophisticated. Classy but edgy. Interior designer Tina Wolff uses those adjectives to describe both this Clayton home and its owner. “She’s well traveled, and she has an art collection that reflects who she is,” Tina says of the homeowner. “She also likes a dab of bling, so all of those things together make the home and her style eclectic and interesting.”

Designations such as “iconic,” “wow factor,” and “legendary” often become hyperbole in today’s world. For this Des Peres golf course home, even industry-leading architects, builders and designers—principals crafting some of the area’s most stunning homes—have struggled to find adequate words to describe the house.

Tegethoff Homes project manager Matt Cerretti sums it up this way: “It is an incredibly special residence,” he says. “It has an absolute plethora of unique features and attributes you don’t often get to explore in St. Louis.”

At a time in life when many people are downsizing, these homeowners did the opposite. They upsized to a grand, five-bedroom home with more than 7,000 square feet so it could be the gathering place for family. In fact, that’s what they call the house—the Gathering Place. “Our whole goal in purchasing this home was to be the anchor home for gatherings,” says the wife, noting their family includes three adult children and four grandchildren with another on the way.

Jean and John of Clayton faced “love it or list it” moments over the last several years in their 91-year-old home. The couple has lived there for more than a decade and a half, all the while bringing up three kids — ages 19, 17 and 13 — within walking distance of the bustle of downtown Clayton, the kids’ school and the MetroLink stops where they frequently catch rides to Cardinals and Blues games and other St. Louis-area attractions.
