Founded in Lineage

I met my Ättlingar business partner, Siri Eklund, while renovating her family’s 1920s Tudor home. With storage space at a premium in this historic home, we set out to incorporate valuable medicine cabinet storage to complement every bath. But when it came to finding a cabinet that matched the home’s level of detail and craftsmanship, nothing on the market inspired us. We started Ättlingar because we believe that everyday hardworking bath fixtures deserve to be as beautiful as they are functional. From mirrors to accessories, we help homeowners and designers add elegance and function to their thoughtfully designed spaces. Meaning “lineage” in Swedish, Ättlingar is a heartfelt nod to Siri’s Nordic heritage and her family’s rich history of craft and cabinetmaking.

Fabulous Function

Inspired by antiques from the 18th and 19th centuries, our medicine cabinets bring a unique level of detail and beauty to an often-overlooked storage piece. Beyond the aesthetic, we’ve found clever ways to make our cabinets distinctively functional. For example, our new locking medicine cabinet collection features a lock and key with a tassel, providing an Old-World appeal while also offering privacy and security.

Keepers of Craft and Tradition

We are inspired by our Swedish heritage and the Scandinavian philosophy that ‘beautiful things make life better.’ All of our cabinets, mirrors and accessories are hand-crafted in Missouri by experts with decades of carpentry experience. Utilizing time-honored woodworking techniques, we craft heirloom-quality pieces featuring signature sawtooth shelving, dovetailed corners and intricate inlays reminiscent of centuries-old antiques. Each Ättlingar inlay design features thousands of cut pieces of walnut, maple, mahogany and sycamore. Unlike mass-produced, utilitarian medicine cabinets, ours are constructed from solid wood with expertly finished boxes and frames.

Interior designers and homeowners alike are craving authenticity in their homes. This can be added through the use of natural materials such as rich woods and timeless stone. Additionally, incorporating locally handcrafted pieces not only provides you with the highest quality, but also ensures that these increasingly rare talents will continue to be nurtured and shared.

Professional Guidance

As an interior designer, I often select a bath mirror early in the design process. It’s essential to determine the mirror size to place the sconce lighting that will flank the mirror perfectly. Homeowners interact with mirrors or cabinets in their bathrooms upon first waking up. I believe it’s the ideal opportunity to reflect the owner’s personality and style and start the day off on an optimistic foot.

Working with an interior designer is a great way to gain access to the best custom furniture and cabinet shops. You’ll also have the guidance of a professional to help you determine the style and function of your custom piece, as well as an expert to provide both the detailed drawings and inspiration!
